Roll's swift straight forward unmannered performance is for me one of the best around. Roll and Shelley are in the modern style taking a leaf from the period instrument movement.I do not find the cycle lacks gravitas but is full of the Sturm and Drang that I would expect from Beethoven.

I would endorse raffells' recommendation for this disc but I have one major reservation. The recording whilst revealing the acoustic of St. Augustine's Kilburn beautifully (I always like to hear birds helping out the musicians) has a thin and fizzy top. I couldn't disagree more. I have liked this performance since it was first issued. I find it, like the rest of Roll's cycle, to be unmannered and straight forward. Other starrier performers have come and gone in the collection but Roll remains. I don't hear the cold clinical sound refered to above ... more |

A massive disappointment. Quite how Harnoncourt manages to produce such a limp, dull performance is beyond me. I liked the his early performance on Teldec also with the Concentus musicus Wien. My set sourced from mdt has notes in English, French and German. Performances are good to very good. I do feel that the Symphonic Dances lack tension though.
